At Corning, I worked on two optimization problems in fiber-optic manufacturing: reducing the time needed to start the heating process and automating fiber-spool selection.

I went into the factory to work with engineers and learn heat modeling and the physics behind the process. I used that understanding to model the heating process and develop an optimization algorithm that reduced startup time by two minutes, with projected annual savings of more than $300,000.

For spool selection, I worked with the staff who handled distribution to clients to understand their planning workflow. I developed a constraint-solving system with Google OR-Tools CP-SAT to automate the manual selection task. The model represents the selection requirements as constraints, allowing the solver to search for valid combinations. The work reduced planning time from 30 minutes to under 30 seconds.
